Cars of the Month 2000
Mark Hewitt was chosen for "Car of the Month". Mark is one of our original members and is a Board Member for the Asphalt Angels.
Mark decided to feature two cars, a 1948 Buick Super and his 1979 Trans AM.
Mark purchased the 48' Buick Super in 1995 for only $500.00. When he bought it, it was "A Basket Case!". It was in such rough shape, birds were nesting in the engine!
What caught Marks attention though was that it was all original- had the original straight 8-
6 volt. Mark also saw the potential in the car.
Mark had to pretty much re-do the car. He re-did the fender skirts and painted the car "Beltsville Taxi Cab", black and white- on a bet!
The car had a lot of cool features, like a side open hood that was removable.
Mark ended up selling it in 99' -for the grill. He feels it was the right decision at the time but…."I really do miss it, I had a lot of fun in that car!"
His 1979 Trans Am (one of my dream cars) was purchased in 1997, again for $500.00 (How does he find these deals ?!?)
The Trans Am also needed a lot of exterior work….but all he had to do was put a battery in it and it ran!
He had to take care of a lot of surface rust and straighten both fenders.
It has an Olds 403 motor and a 350 Turbo Trans. It also has 279 miles on it and is still ticking!
Future plans for the Trans Am would be to rebuild the transmission and beef up the motor.
This car is Marks "Daily Drive", and it's not a bad way to go!
